about

This song was originally written in 2012 during February Album Writing Month, when I was twenty-five and a half. Now that it's 2016 and I'm twenty-nine and a half, I've updated the lyrics appropriately. The overall sentiment remains the same.

lyrics

I just turned twenty-nine and a half
It's closer to thirty than I was before
And I don't really feel like a grown-up
But there are certain things that I just can't ignore

Like the bills I must pay for my power and phone
Like the fact I don't actually own my own home
Like the strong possibility I'll die alone
But I guess that's life

Oh and I'll be the one at the party
Pouring out my soul to strangers I've got cornered in the kitchen
Talking 'bout what I'm afraid of - how I'm only getting older
But the wiser isn't coming and I'm not sure what to do

I just turned twenty-nine and a half
And twenty feels like such a long time ago
I remember the end of my teen years
Thinking that I'd escaped all the angst and the woe

But my twenties brought all sorts of grief to my door
And a whole host of problems I'd not had before
And I frequently picked my heart up off the floor
But I guess that's life

Oh and I'll be the one at the party
Pouring out my soul to strangers I've got cornered in the kitchen
Talking 'bout what I'm afraid of - how I'm only getting older
But the wiser isn't coming and I'm not sure what to do

And all the cool kids are having mid-quarter life crises
But let's be honest - I was never cool

Oh and I'll be the one at the party
Pouring out my soul to strangers I've got cornered in the kitchen
Talking 'bout what I'm afraid of - how I'm only getting older
But the wiser isn't coming and I'm not sure what to do

Channeling the energy of a kindergarten teacher and the wisdom of your favourite wine aunty, Troubadette has been making musical mayhem across Aotearoa for over 20 years. ... more
